Course Overview

Designed for people who already have practical forklift operating experience, this two-day course focuses on confirming and refining the skills and knowledge needed to operate a forklift safely.

The course combines classroom learning, practical activities and assessment, with less introductory practice time than the beginner course. It includes the training and assessment required as part of the process for applying for a Forklift Truck (LF) High Risk Work Licence in Victoria.

A WorkSafe High Risk Work Licence is not automatically issued when you complete the course.

Nationally Recognised Training

TLILIC0003 – Licence to operate a forklift truck

Who Is This Course For?

This course is designed for experienced learners who are already familiar with operating a forklift and do not require the additional practical training provided in the beginner course. It may suit:

    • workers with previous hands-on forklift operating experience
    • experienced operators who need to obtain their Victorian LF High Risk Work Licence
    • workers in warehousing, transport, logistics, manufacturing or distribution
    • existing employees who regularly operate or have previously operated forklifts
    • experienced workers who are confident with basic forklift controls, manoeuvring and load handling

WorkSafe Victoria recognises LF and LO as separate high-risk work licence classes.

What You’ll Learn

The course covers the knowledge and practical skills required to demonstrate safe forklift operation, including:

    • carrying out pre-start inspections and identifying faults
    • recognising hazards around forklifts, pedestrians and work areas
    • understanding forklift controls, capacity limits and information plates
    • safely steering and manoeuvring the forklift
    • lifting, travelling with and placing loads correctly
    • parking, securing and shutting down the forklift after use

The two-day format is designed for experienced learners who already have practical forklift skills and are ready to demonstrate their capability through training and assessment.

WorkSafe Victoria also highlights forklift familiarisation, capacity and load limits, information plates, pre-start inspections and task-specific operating conditions as important areas of forklift training.

Entry Requirements

Participants must:

    • be at least 18 years of age to be eligible for a High Risk Work Licence
    • have sufficient English language skills to understand safety instructions and complete the required training and assessment
    • provide appropriate photo identification when registering for the training

Is the Experienced Forklift Operator Course Right for You?

The Experienced Forklift Operator course is a shortened training pathway designed for learners who already have practical forklift operating experience and are confident completing common forklift tasks with minimal instruction.

Before enrolling, you should consider whether your previous experience has given you the practical skills and familiarity needed to participate in an experienced operator course.

You may be suited to the experienced pathway if you:

    • Have previously operated a forklift in a workplace or similar practical environment.
    • Are familiar with completing basic forklift pre-start checks.
    • Can safely start, operate, steer and stop a forklift without needing basic instruction.
    • Have experience picking up, transporting and placing loads.
    • Have experience stacking and unstacking loads at different heights.
    • Understand common forklift hazards, including pedestrians, unstable loads, ramps, restricted visibility and overhead hazards.
    • Are familiar with checking load weights, forklift capacity and the forklift data/load plate before lifting.
    • Feel confident completing normal forklift operating tasks with minimal instruction or coaching.

If most or all of the above statements describe your experience, the Experienced Forklift Operator course may be suitable for you.

If you have limited practical forklift experience, require instruction in basic forklift operation, or are not yet confident with load handling and stacking, the Beginner Forklift Operator course may be a more suitable option.

Important Information About the Experienced Pathway

The experienced course is designed for learners with existing practical skills; however, previous experience does not guarantee a successful assessment outcome.

Your trainer and assessor will evaluate your skills during the course. If additional training is required, or if you are assessed as Not Yet Competent, you may need to complete further training and/or reassessment. Additional fees may apply in accordance with Programmed’s current Schedule of Fees.

When enrolling in the experienced pathway, you will be asked to confirm that the information you provide about your previous forklift experience is accurate and that you meet the eligibility requirements for the course.

Certification / Outcome

Learners who successfully complete the training and assessment requirements will receive a Statement of Attainment for: TLILIC0003 – Licence to operate a forklift truck

After passing the required assessment, learners receive an Assessment Number by email or a written Notice of Assessment. They can then apply to WorkSafe Victoria for the High Risk Work Licence and must lodge the application with their assessment results within 60 calendar days.

The licence itself is issued by WorkSafe Victoria and is separate from the Statement of Attainment issued after successful completion of the training.
