Course Overview

Confined Space Rescue is a practical three-day course designed for workers who may be required to safely enter, work in and respond to emergencies in confined spaces. Training covers confined space entry, hazard controls, permits, atmospheric monitoring, breathing apparatus and rescue techniques, including casualty management and CPR. Learners complete classroom-based theory and hands-on simulated activities to develop the skills needed to carry out confined space work and rescue tasks safely within resources and infrastructure environments.

    • workers in resources and infrastructure industries who enter or work around confined spaces
    • workers who may be required to perform confined space rescue duties
    • confined space standby personnel looking to develop rescue capabilities
    • workplace emergency response personnel
    • employers requiring workers to be trained across confined space entry, standby and rescue activities

What You’ll Learn

During the course, you’ll learn how to:

    • identify confined space hazards and apply appropriate risk controls
    • complete and work with confined space permits
    • conduct gas testing and monitor atmospheric conditions
    • safely operate breathing apparatus, including in reduced visibility
    • carry out confined space rescue techniques and manage casualties
    • provide CPR and respond appropriately during an emergency

Entry Requirements

Participants must have the physical ability to safely complete the practical components of the course. Activities may include climbing ladders, wearing and being suspended in a full-body harness, entering and working in confined spaces and completing manual handling tasks.

Participants must also have sufficient language, literacy and numeracy skills to read and interpret workplace documents, communicate workplace information and complete basic calculations. An LLN assessment is required.

Prerequisite requirements:

  • MSMWHS201 – Conduct hazard analysis must be completed before undertaking MSMPER300 – Issue work permits.
  • For Fire Sector participants, PUASAR022 – Participate in a rescue operation and PUAFIR316 – Identify, detect and monitor hazardous materials at an incident are prerequisites.

 

Certification / Outcome

On successful completion, the course outcomes include the Confined Space Entry and Confined Space Standby units together with:

    • MSMWHS216 – Operate breathing apparatus
    • PUASAR025 – Undertake Confined Space Rescue
    • HLTAID009 – Provide cardiopulmonary recuscitation
