Course Overview

Confined Space Standby is a two-day course covering confined space entry as well as the skills needed to support and monitor confined space work. Participants learn about atmospheric gas testing, issuing and managing work permits, monitoring confined space conditions and maintaining permit requirements, including during shift handovers. Training combines classroom instruction with practical activities using safety equipment in simulated workplace situations.

This course is suitable for:

    • workers in the resources and infrastructure industries involved in confined space activities
    • workers performing confined space standby or monitoring duties
    • personnel responsible for observing work carried out under a permit
    • workers who need to conduct gas testing and atmospheric monitoring
    • personnel involved in issuing or managing work permits

    • conduct gas testing and atmospheric monitoring

Entry Requirements

MSMWHS201 – Conduct hazard analysis must be completed before undertaking MSMPER300 – Issue work permits.

There are no co-requisite units listed for this course.

Participants must also:

    • have the physical ability to complete practical confined space activities, which may include climbing ladders while maintaining three points of contact, wearing a full body harness, being suspended in a harness, entering and working in a confined space, and manual handling
    • have sufficient language, literacy and numeracy skills to read, interpret, complete and communicate workplace documents and procedures and perform basic calculations
    • successfully complete the LLN assessment
    • must be at least 18 years of age
    • Participants are recommended to provide and wear a hard hat, long clothing, steel cap boots and gloves.

 

Certification / Outcome

On successful completion, the course outcomes include the Confined Space Entry units together with:

    • MSMPER300 – Issue work permits
    • MSMPER202 – Observe permit work
    • MSMWHS217 – Gas test atmospheres
