Traffic Control Training – Combined TC1 & TMI1 (TAS)

This combined course is designed for people who want to start or build their skills in temporary traffic management on urban streets and low-volume rural roads in Tasmania. It covers both traffic control and traffic management implementation in Temporary Traffic Management Category 1 environments.

You’ll learn how to control traffic, set up and use temporary traffic control devices, implement Traffic Guidance Schemes and Traffic Management Plans, manage workplace risks and work safely around live traffic and roadwork sites. The program combines classroom learning, practical training and supervised workplace experience.

TMI1 – RIISS00060 – Traffic Management Implementer Skill Set for Urban Streets and Low Volume Rural Roads

These skill sets form the entry-level TC1 and TMI1 program under the Austroads Temporary Traffic Management National Training Framework.

This course is suitable for:

• • new entrants, job seekers and people looking to move into traffic management work
  • roadworkers, civil construction workers and utilities workers
  • local council and event traffic staff
  • workers who need TC1 and TMI1 training for Temporary Traffic Management Category 1 environments
  • employers wanting to train traffic control teams, including through group or workplace-based arrangements

What You’ll Learn

During the course, you’ll develop practical skills to:

• • control traffic safely using a stop/slow bat
  • use portable traffic control devices and temporary traffic signs
  • implement Traffic Guidance Schemes and Traffic Management Plans
  • position, set up and program portable traffic control devices
  • identify hazards and apply workplace risk management processes
  • communicate effectively and work safely around live traffic and roadwork sites

The training covers the requirements of both the TC1 and TMI1 skill sets.

Delivery Arrangements

Course duration:
3 days of formal training, followed by required workplace practical experience and final assessment. All post-course TC1 and TMI1 requirements must be completed within six months of the formal course.

• • For TC1, learners must complete at least 20 logged hours of practical traffic control experience before completing the final practical assessment.
  • For TMI1, learners must complete three different traffic management setups, including the final assessment, based on Traffic Management Plans and Traffic Guidance Schemes relevant to their working conditions.

Delivery mode:
Face-to-face training incorporating classroom learning, practical activities and assessment.

Post-course practical experience is completed in a suitable temporary traffic management workplace under appropriate supervision.

Location:
Available statewide in Tasmania, with ongoing intakes promoted in Launceston, Hobart, Devonport and Burnie.

Employer and group training may also be available at suitable workplaces.

$1,550.00

Entry Requirements

Before enrolling, learners must:

• • hold CPCWHS1001 – Prepare to work safely in the construction industry, or an equivalent unit, at the time of enrolment
  • provide evidence / Statement of Attainment of the completed unit — a copy of a construction industry White Card alone does not meet this entry requirement
  • have a Unique Student Identifier (USI)
  • provide photo identification
  • be able to provide a recent passport-style photograph, which will be submitted to Austroads.
  • be able to participate safely in practical and outdoor training activities
  • have the English, communication and learning skills needed to complete the training and assessment
  • meet any additional requirements of the relevant State/Territory Transport Agency

Certification / Outcome

Learners who complete all training, workplace experience and assessment requirements will receive Statements of Attainment for the nationally recognised training completed as part of:

RIISS00058 – Traffic Controller Skill Set for Urban Streets and Low Volume Rural Roads and

RIISS00060 – Traffic Management Implementer Skill Set for Urban Streets and Low Volume Rural Roads

The training is designed for people seeking approval to undertake TC1 and TMI1 work in Temporary Traffic Management Category 1 environments. Any licensing, accreditation or approval requirements are subject to the requirements of the relevant State or Territory Transport Agency and are not automatically issued simply by attending the course.
